Do spider veins or varicose veins have you wanting to cover up your legs, no matter the season? If so, you’re not alone. Over 40% of women report having at least one type of unsightly vein in their legs. Fortunately, sclerotherapy can help you say goodbye to unsightly veins in no time!
At Hamptons Vein & Vascular in Rutherford and Westfield, New Jersey, our skilled providers understand the embarrassment and discomfort spider and varicose veins can bring. We work with you to identify problematic veins and the best course of treatment to make them disappear.
One of those treatments is sclerotherapy. Read on to learn more about this treatment and the two forms we offer to help make your legs stand out!
What is sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is an in-office procedure that safely treats spider and varicose veins. During sclerotherapy, we inject a solution that irritates the inside of your problematic veins directly into your problem veins. The irritation causes the walls of your troublesome veins to collapse. This prevents blood from entering the affected vein, eventually making it disappear.
Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment that doesn’t require anesthesia. You’ll need to wear compression stockings for 48 hours and avoid strenuous physical activity for about two weeks, but you can resume normal daily activities immediately.
At Hamptons Vein & Vascular, we offer two types of sclerotherapy: foam and liquid. Here’s what you need to know about these treatment types:
Foam sclerotherapy
During foam sclerotherapy, we inject a foam solution into your problematic veins and use ultrasound imaging to precisely target your trouble spots. The foam expands and pushes out the old blood, contacting the vein walls at full strength. This makes foam sclerotherapy a good choice for moderate to large varicose veins.
Liquid sclerotherapy
With liquid sclerotherapy, we inject a medicated liquid solution into the affected veins. Liquid sclerotherapy also causes vein walls to collapse but is a milder solution than the foam alternative. As such, it’s best used on spider veins or smaller varicose veins.
Your provider at Hamptons Vein & Vascular meets with you to evaluate your veins and symptoms before recommending the best course of treatment for your unique needs. Both liquid and foam sclerotherapy can help your legs shine this summer!
