Ambulatory Phlebectomy

After the Venefit procedure has closed the main incompetent superficial veins, there are often refluxing tributary veins which must be dealt with, as these veins can be a source of symptoms and recurrence of varicose veins. Ambulatory phlebectomy is very effective in removing large, bulging varicose veins that are easily visible on the skin’s surface. It is an outpatient procedure done in the office under local anesthesia. It may be performed for medical reasons (pain, swelling, and discomfort) or for purely cosmetic reasons.

This procedure involves making tiny needle punctures on the skin over the affected vein. A small surgical hook is then inserted to grab the vein and remove it from the leg. Veins are very collapsible such that even large veins may be removed through the tiny incisions used in this technique. The procedure typically takes less than an hour. After treatment, a compression bandage is usually placed for 24 hours. The patient is able to walk following the procedure and return to normal activity in 24 hours. While many veins can be treated during a single treatment session, additional visits may be needed to remove all of affected varicose veins. Ambulatory phlebectomy is a permanent solution for unsightly, bulging veins!
